About

(Wisner Photo)
I am just your typical girl: newlywed, first time homeowner and doggie mom...except I'm a little different.

I don't "do life" in what is considered a "normal" way. I find it sad that today "normal" means being unhealthy, living in debt and never questioning why things are the way they are. After years of simply asking why and never really getting a good answer, I instead simply decided there has to be a better way. And then I began searching for the better ways...

I'm not going to lie. When it comes to my home, I want it to be gorgeous. I want it to look like the homes you see in magazines or on HGTV (oh, how I love thee...). But I am not willing to spend a gazillion dollars to do it. So much of what I do in my home, I do myself and as cheaply as possible (with the help of my hubby, of course). To that end, I scour the earth for every thrift store, flea market, garage and estate sale I can find and I very rarely ever buy anything retail or at full price. I DIY anything I think I can feasibly pull off and I love to share my projects...even when they don't turn out as well as I had hoped! Live and learn, right?

Besides building a beautiful home, I am a bona fide health nut! Throughout college I was very overweight and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. When all the fad diets I tried failed me, I once again said to myself there has to be a better way. So I went back to the basics and taught myself real nutrition based on whole, organic, local and seasonal foods. I learned the detrimental effects of the plethora of processed foods in the American diet and I work hard every day to eradicate those substances from my diet. I believe whole foods and daily exercise are the keys to a truly healthy life.

I am also a staunch believer in natural home and beauty products. After years of suffering from various painful and embarrassing skin conditions (acne, eczema, etc.), through research and trial and error, I discovered that I am allergic to many substances found in common, everyday products such as lotions and make-up. At first, it was devastating for me to realize that I could no longer wear my favorite foundation and that every face wash and moisturizer recommended to me by my dermatologist was actually making my condition worse! Again, I had to go back to the basics and teach myself what these nasty, toxic substances were, how to avoid them and what to use in their place. It was a long process and very frustrating at times, but I can tell you now that using all natural products on my skin has made all the difference in the world!

Yeah...I do things differently. Many people might think I'm strange, or too "granola", or jaded about the world in general (in fact, I know they do), but I'm okay with that because I know what it was like to be "normal" and, frankly, I'm much happier living outside the box!

So welcome to my beautiful life, outside the box! Stay awhile, have a cuppa, kick off your shoes. I'm so happy your here!

Love,
Joy
